It’s been a rollercoaster ride of a year for people all over the world with the pandemic and everything else going on and Australians certainly weren’t immune to any of it. To make things worse, vapers in Australia were suddenly faced with the prospect of not being able to legally acquire vaping supplies with nicotine in them when the government proposed banning nicotine e-liquid imports. But now the country’s vapers can vape in peace once more as the government’s ban proposal has been quietly shuttered. Here’s how it all went down.
Australia’s Ban On Nicotine E-Liquid Imports
In Australia, vapers commonly use the internet to buy vaping supplies with nicotine in them from overseas companies. This is a well-known process by both vapers and the government that regulates such activities and it is not illegal for adults in Australia to use this avenue to buy nicotine vape supplies for personal use. But all of this was on the verge of changing when Greg Hunt, the country’s health minister, issued a formal request to the Australian Border Force and Department of Health to work together on new nicotine e-cig regulations.
The Ban Proposal
Greg Hunt’s proposed ban on nicotine e-liquid imports was initially set to become reality at the start of July of this year. It would have remained in place for 12 long months, but then it was postponed.
Postponed For Six Months
After pushback from within his own political party, Hunt eventually delayed the ban for six months before it went into effect. This pushed the ban’s start date out to the start of next year. In a statement, he acknowledged that there are, in fact, Australians who have been and continue to use e-cigs with nicotine to quit cigarettes, which should be obvious to anyone who knows anything about vaping and why so many smokers have switched from cigarettes to vapes.
Ban Scrapped
After postponing the ban, the government eventually scrapped the plan. What happens next remains to be seen, but as of now, vapers in Australia can continue to buy vaping supplies with nicotine online and import them into the country for their own personal use.
Vaping In Australia Continues
Vapers all across Australia are continuing to vape. In Australia, cigarette prices have risen to astronomical levels, now costing some smokers as much as A$ 50 a pack. That is crazy high compared to countries like the United States and the reason is increased tax, which results in a very significant amount of revenue for the government. The idea, on the surface, is to tax cigarettes heavily so that smokers quit. If it was that easy for smokers to quit, one might assume that they’d just do so. What this tax is doing, at least in part, is placing an increasing amount of strain on the finances of smokers down under. Vaping, however, has created a path for smokers to leave cigarettes behind, but it is a path that is under attack. This latest ban proposal from Australia is evidence of just that, an attack on vaping and Australia’s vapers.
In the face of an onslaught of attacks from various parties, vapers across Australia have continued to vape. Even in Western Australia’s capital city of Perth, there are vapers who continue to vape, which may not seem all that surprising until you see just how strict WA is when it comes to vaping.
How Australians Buy Nicotine E-Liquid
Even though vape juice with nicotine in it isn’t sold at local shops on the ground in Australia, there is another option and one which many of Australia’s use. Through the internet, Aussies have access to a wide world of vaping supplies with and without nicotine in them. It’s technically not illegal for adults in Australia to import nicotine vape juice for personal use, but doing so requires knowledge of overseas suppliers that ship to Australia. There are many vape shops on the internet but not all of them ship to Australia. For online vape stores that do ship to Australia, delivery times can vary greatly depending on how quickly the store processes customer orders, the location in which they store their inventory, which shipping company they use to mail orders, and which shipping option is used, such as standard or express.
One thing Australians need to remember when ordering e-juice from an overseas company on the internet is that there is a limitation on how much can be imported at one time and this limit is no more than what constitutes a three month supply of vape liquid.
