Canada’s federal government is moving towards banning flavored vaping products. While it’s far from certain that the ban will be imposed, the government department that oversees the country’s national health policy, Health Canada, has put forward draft regulations that would heavily restrict e-cigarette flavors.

If the proposed regulations do become law, the only flavored vaping products that Canadians would have access to would be tobacco, menthol and mint.

While this is obviously bad news for Canadian vapers who use flavored vaping products to stay away from cigarettes, it’s also bad news for smokers in the country who may attempt to switch to vaping at some point in the future.

As it turns out, not everyone is a fan of tobacco, menthol and mint. While the government says that the restrictions are aimed at protecting “a new generation of Canadians at risk of nicotine addiction,” there’s likely no shortage of adult vapers in the country who have quit smoking with the help of vaping products that will be negatively impacted if the regulations are passed.

The proposed regulations don’t end at eliminating flavored vaping products. They would also prohibit the use of sugars and sweeteners in vaping products and limit the tastes and smells that vape companies can conjure up.

Health Canada’s latest proposal for new regulations to further restrict the vaping industry arrived on the same day that the federal government finalized its lowering of the maximum nicotine strength of vaping products to 20mg/ml, which is substantially lower than the 66mg/ml that was previously allowed. The new nicotine cap on vaping products is set to take effect for vape manufacturers on July 8, 2021. Vape retailers will have until July 23 to pull any vaping products from shelves that exceed the new limit.
